Dianne Brigman has retired after nine years of service to Richmond Community College, where she served as an online instructor for the General Educational Development (GED) program.

Brigman was hired in 2004 as RCC’s first instructor of online GED classes. The program, which started with a dozen students, now averages 130 students enrolled per semester. The online GED program caters to students whose work or family responsibilities make it difficult for them to attend regular classes.

“It has been such a pleasure to touch people’s lives who could not come to traditional classes and to offer them another way to reach their educational goals,” Brigman said.

“By getting their GED, they’re trying to better their lives, and I feel like I have played a part in the lives of the 300 people who have come through the program since I’ve been with RCC. It is so amazing how much it makes you feel like you’ve made a difference and that’s what I’m about,” she said.

Dale McInnis, president of RCC, and Steve Smith, vice president of Workforce and Economic Development, presented Brigman with a framed state certificate of retirement and applauded her for the work she has done to grow the online GED program.

Brigman and her husband, Ronald, live in Hamlet. They have a son, Ronnie, and two grandchildren, Noah and Kelsie.

Brigman said she plans to enjoy her retirement by spending time with her family and traveling. However, she does plan to return to RCC next August to do part-time work.
