HAMLET — Kids splashed, classic cars gleamed and fireworks popped as Richmond County residents celebrated Independence Day on Friday.

Dozens came out to downtown Hamlet’s Main Street Park for the city’s annual Family Fun Day, which featured live music from the Carolina Soul Band, an inflatable waterslide and tricycle race for the kids and a dazzling fireworks display after nightfall.

The Main Street Cruise-In classic car show took place during the Fourth of July, and the Hamlet Depot Museums offered free admission during the outdoor festival.

Family fun also greeted residents and visitors in Ellerbe, where the Ellerbe Lions Club held its annual Fourth of July Jamboree featuring watermelon races, bounce houses, kids’ games and food. The jamboree hosted its own fireworks display, with Ellerbe volunteer firefighters who are state-licensed pyrotechnics operators.
