ROCKINGHAM — Greg Wrape led all Discovery Place KIDS Big Fun Run 5K finishers around the 3.1-mile single loop course in 19 minutes to earn the win.

Wrape, 29, of Hamlet, outdistanced the next closest competitor by more than a minute. Drew Meacham, 16, of Ellerbe, was second in 20:14 while Neil Robinette, 26, of Martson, was third in 21:01.

Ed Napier, 62, of Hamlet, earned the men’s masters (40-plus) title by placing 12th overall in 25:16.

In the women’s race, 13-year-old Kayley Mabe, of Hamlet, stopped the clock in 26:41 to secure the victory. Kimberly Lingler, 35, was second in 27:11. The Rockingham woman pushed her two young sons in front of her in a stroller the entire course.

Amy Faw, 40, of Rockingham, rounded out the top three females and earned the women’s masters title with a time of 28:01.

A total of 105 participants crossed the 5K finish line despite the dreary and dismal forecast for the area — rain and possible thunderstorms.
