HAMLET — A man was taken to the hospital late Thursday night after being shot in the street.

The victim was shot once in the leg while on Washington Avenue, in front of the Washington Court Apartments before 10 p.m., according to Detective Capt. Randy Dover with the Hamlet Police Department.

He was found by Richmond County sheriff’s deputies on Longwood Street in Dobbins Heights — about a half-mile away — and was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond for treatment.

Police initially had a small portion of the street taped off about a block down from Hamlet Food Mart, but later extended the crime scene to the corner of the convenience store’s property.

Two people, a man and a woman, were arrested for walking through the crime scene. Their names were not available at the time this story was written.

The scene was cleared at 11:15 and Dover said a suspect had been identified but an arrest had not yet been made.

Like most of the shootings in the area since May of last year, Dover said this one was gang related.
