ROCKINGHAM — Deputies are trying to find the person responsible for driving into an East Rockingham gas station late Friday, sending a customer to the hospital.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of a Jeep plowed into the front door of the Liberty station on Airport Road around 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Investigators describe the suspect’s vehicle as being a black or dark green Jeep Cherokee with after-market rims and tires, a winch and an after-market bumper.

The injured customer, who was not identified, was flown to a hospital in Chapel Hill for treatment, but no current condition was given.

The store suffered an estimated $10,000 worth of damages, according to investigators.

Deputies say they are unable to determine if the incident was an accident or intentional, since the driver left the scene.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating, but had made no arrests nor identified any suspects as of Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 910-895-3232 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.
