ELLERBE — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is in the midst of a death investigation after two bodies were found in a vehicle Sunday morning.

The incident was initially called in as a wreck on Lee Thee Church Road, less than a quarter-mile from Haywood Cemetery Road, with the N.C. Highway Patrol being dispatched, Chief Deputy Mark Gulledge said Monday morning. He said the vehicle had left the roadway and come to a rest on the edge of the wood line.

Upon arrival troopers discovered the bodies of two adults, a man and woman, inside the vehicle — along with a small child, who was restrained in a safety seat in the back, according to Gulledge.

Troopers then contacted the sheriff’s office to conduct a death investigation, he added.

Gulledge said the child was taken by FirstHealth EMS to Richmond Memorial Hospital for precautionary measures.

“At this time we are still working the investigation and we do have a person of interest in custody,” Gulledge said. “We’ll have further details as the investigation continues today.”

Names of the victims have not yet been released.
