HAMLET — The discovery of a dead body led to the closure of Wiregrass Road for several hours Thursday morning, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr. told the Daily Journal on Friday the body was that of 30-year-old Glen Joseph McRae.

Clemmons said his office received the call around 6:29 a.m. and the first deputy arrived on the scene eight minutes later to find McRae deceased, about a quarter-mile north of the intersection with Spring Street.

The Hamlet Police Department was called to help block Wiregrass Road on their end, while deputies sat at the intersection with County Home Road. Clemmons said the road closure was in order to preserve evidence at the scene in the case of a hit-and-run.

No cause of death had been determined as of Friday afternoon. McRae’s body was sent off for an autopsy.

The sheriff said that investigators are unsure if McRae’s death was related his past criminal associations, but they are not ruling out foul play.

“As with every investigation, you turn over every stone,” Clemmons said.

It is also unclear whether McRae had any gang affiliations. He was charged in a Hamlet shooting last summer, but investigators say those charges were ultimately dismissed.
