Richmond Senior High School student airlifted after fall from balcony

Staff report

ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond Senior High School student was airlifted to Chapel Hill after falling from a balcony Thursday morning.

According to Ashley-Michelle Thublin, public information officer for Richmond County Schools, the incident happened around 8:10 a.m. as students were reporting to their first classes of the day.

Thublin said no other students were involved and that there is “no reason to believe the student was trying to harm himself.”

School administrators, security and medical staff “immediatly rushed to the student’s aid,” Thublin said, adding that the student was responsive when local EMTs arrived.

“They made the medical decision that the student should be transported to UNC Medical Center,” she said.

Thublin said school counselors are on hand to talk with students about the incident and that the school is continuing to gather information.

“Student safety is always of the upmost importance to Richmond County Schools,” she said.
