ROCKINGHAM — Saturday’s Jonathan Griggs benefit softball tournament will be moved to East Rockingham Park.

The games are still set to begin at 9 a.m., but the location has changed from the Babe Ruth baseball fields in Hamlet to East Rockingham Park, 135 Safie Sixth St., due to a scheduling conflict, organizer Adrian Leviner said Friday evening.

Relatives and friends have planned the tournament to help Griggs’ family with medical expenses weeks after the 30-year-old Hamlet native was found unconscious behind the wheel of his wrecked car May 30 near McColl, South Carolina.

Griggs was taken to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence with serious injuries that required doctors to amputate one of his legs.

Peggy Davis, Griggs’ mother, said Davis said her son remained in the McLeod trauma intensive care unit from May 30 to June 17 before he was finally transferred to a regular ICU room after he came off the ventilator. He suffered a broken hip joint, broken pelvis, bruised lungs and a broken nose and collarbone.
