The Stokes County Arts Councils Summer Music Series will continue this weekend, June 27 & 28, with free public concerts by the UNC School of the Arts Summer Strings, featuring the Giannini Quartet, and Bethabara Concert Band at King Central Park, 302 Kirby Road in King.
Summer Strings is a program of the UNC School of the Arts Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute where students ages 12 and up are immersed in an intensive and supportive musical environment with faculty who are both world-class performers and dedicated teachers. The Chrysalis Institute fosters the development of outstanding chamber musicians through coaching, rehearsals, seminars and performance opportunities, and through the mentorship of UNCSA’s distinguished faculty and a host of distinguished visiting artists. The program also offers opportunities for students to perform for their teachers, their peers, and the general public in performances halls on the UNCSA campus, as well as venues in Stokes County. This Saturday’s June 27 performance will begin at 7pm at the King Central Park Amphitheatre and feature student ensemble selections, as well as a performance by the Giannini Quartet, the scholarship string quartet of the Chrysalis Institute. The group is comprised of members Lucia Kobza (violin), Quashawn Chadwick (violin), Bennett Astrove (viola) and John Elias Kaynor (cello).
2015 marks the 29th anniversary of the Bethabara Concert Band, whose first public performance took place at Historic Bethabara Park in Forsyth County on September 4, 1986. The bands founding father, John Cline, felt that the establishment of a band would be an appropriate way to celebrate the founding of the Bethabara settlement and the important role that music has played in the lives of Moravians. The band performs at concerts and special events at the park June through October and is currently made up of around fifty members of all ages and musical backgrounds. Under the direction of Stokes County resident Robah Ogburn, the June 28, 7:30pm performance at King Central Park will be a preview of the bands Independence Day concert and feature various marches and patriotic selections.
Attendees to both concerts are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair. The concerts are free to the public, and concessions will be available for purchase.
