LAURINBURG — Police and sheriff’s deputies arrested a Laurinburg man Friday on assault charges in a May 2 pistol-whipping, according to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

George Mitchell, 20, of 410 Bizzell St., is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Scotland County jail under a $2,000 bond.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Mitchell was convicted of his first felony, common-law robbery, in 2011. He was convicted in March 2012 of illegally possessing a firearm, and in November of that same year of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
