PRE-SCREENS FOR WELLNESS SCREENING DAY from 6 to 10 a.m. at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. Screenings include wellness blood profile, prostate-specific antigen, EKG, glycosolated hemoglobin A1C, basic spirometry for lung assessment, urinalysis, osteoporosis, blood pressure and pap smear by appointment.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE with Alexandra Sokoloff and Craig Robertson will be at 5:30 p.m. at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities, 555 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines. Sokoloff, longtime writer-in-residence and Thriller Award winner, will be joined by Scottish crime author Robertson for the October read. The event is free and open to the public.

NORMAN FEST GNAT SCAT INAUGURAL 2-MILE GLOW-IN-THE-DARK FUN RUN will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9. The cost to participate is $15, and the registration deadline is Oct. 8. All participants are guaranteed a Gnat Scat T-shirt, either glow-in-the-dark or regular. The Gnat Scat will begin at the Norman Methodist Church, continue up U.S. 220 North to County Line Road, turn left at the first dirt road, return to Capel Mill Road and finish back at the church. There will be spotters along the course. No one under 13 will be allowed to race due to the length and darkness. Runners participating are asked to meet at the church at 7:15 p.m.
