Alan Massey Howe, 60, of Wilmington, lost his battle with cancer on Sept. 8, 2010. He was born in Hamlet on Oct. 8,1949, to the late John Elmer and Louise Howe. He is survived by his wife, Gay Phifer Howe; daughters, Yve of Emerald Isle, Alanna of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and brothers, Michael Howe of Hamlet, John Howe, and Will Willford of Palm Springs, CA.

After receiving his BA in English and Masters in Teaching from UNC Chapel Hill, Alan taught English in Goose Creek, S.C. before pursuing a career in software engineering. He worked for AT&T at Bell Laboratories and later consulted for companies such as NYNEX and Air Canada.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Hamlet with Reverend Eugene Tyson officiating. A reception with the family will follow at 203 Palm Street.

Alan was a truly unique individual with a flare for the obscure. He will be missed dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be donated to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org/involved/donate/index
