Raider Roundup: Richmond harriers open 2010 season on road

RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior cross country teams opened the 2010 season Tuesday night at Hoke County with a three-way meet against Hoke and Pinecrest. Both the men’s and women’s teams posted second-place showings.

On the men’s side, Pinecrest was first, with Richmond second and Hoke third.

For the Raider men, Eli Locklear led the way, winning individual meet honors with an 18:14 race. Randy Altman was second (18:21); Daniel Miller was 15th (23:06); Christian Smith was 18th (24:24); and Phillip Waddell Jr. was 22nd (25:25).

On the women’s side, Pinecrest also won the meet, with Richmond second and Hoke third.

Marie Collins turned in the highest showing for the Lady Raiders (11th, 26:51; followed by Keyshawn Jones (13th, 27:32); Morgan Tedder (14th, 27:20); Belle Hillenburg (15th, 27:27); and Shani Nicholson (16th, 28:03).

Both teams will return to action on Saturday at an invitational at Culberton High School in Union County. Richmond will host Hoke and Lumberton next Tuesday at Hinson Lake.

Lady Raiders net first win

PEMBROKE — The Richmond Senior women’s tennis team earned its first victory of 2010 Tuesday afternoon on the road, topping Purnell Swett, 6-3.

In singles, at No. 1, Richmond’s Courtney Pope lost to Jessica Oxendine, 2-6, 3-6; at No. 2, the Lady Raiders’ Ashley Martin fell to Larissa Lowery, 2-6, 3-6; at No. 3, Richmond’s Meagan Davis defeated Lela Waltman, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); at No. 4, the Lady Raiders’ Brittany Hudson defeated Elizabeth Locklear, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7; at No. 5, Richmond’s Caroline Kirkland topped Kailey Godwin, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8; and at No. 6, Richmond’s Katy Shelley beat April White, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles competition, at No. 1, Richmond’s Pope and Martin lost to Oxendine and Lowery, 3-8; at No. 2, Richmond’s Hudson and Davis downed Waltman and Locklear, 8-6; and at No. 3, the Lady Raiders’ Bailey Coulthard and Kirkland defeated Godwin and White, 8-3.

In exhibition matches, Shelly won, 8-1; and Kirsten Leviner and Abby Carpenter won a doubles match, 6-0.

“It was a red-letter day for us,” Richmond head coach Paula York said. “We played well.”

The Lady Raiders (1-3 SEC, 1-4 overall) return to action on Thursday when they travel to Lumberton for another SEC matchup.



Lady Raider golfers third at Hoke

RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior women’s golf team finished third behind Pinecrest and Scotland in an SEC meet Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Club.

Emily Smith led Richmond with an 83, followed by Hannah White with a 106; Leeann Oliveaux with a 111; Kimberly Covington with a 123 and Olivia Farrah with a 126.

The Lady Raiders were without the services of Krystal Long, who was out sick. Richmond coach Ray Entwistle said, “We really missed her contributions.”

Richmond returns to action next Monday in another SEC meet at Scotch Meadows in Laurinburg.
