Richmond County is under a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m.
The National Weather Service issued the hazardous weather outlook Friday afternoon as temperatures in downtown Rockingham reached 83 degrees. As the afternoon progressed, however, wind speed increased — foreshadowing what could come next.
Fifty-seven of North Carolina’s 100 counties are included in the Tornado Watch, including Anson, Montgomery, Moore and Scotland counties.
“The potential for strong to severe thunderstorms … and periods of heavy rain” are possible, according to The National Weather Service.
Residents near Charlotte were reporting strong winds and golf ball-sized hail across social media outlets mid-Friday afternoon. According to www.stormersite.com, residents in cities including Charlotte, Gastonia, Huntersville, Indian Trail and Harrisburg, among others, have reported damaging hail.
