Editor’s note: This letter was written to Gov. Pat McCrory and sent to The Daily Journal for publication.
Dear Gov. McCrory,
As a concerned citizen of Hamlet, N.C., I am deeply appalled by your apparent lack of concern for the health and well-being of the citizens of our state.
As the governor of the people of North Carolina, I feel that you should be outraged by the actions of Duke Energy and the lack of government oversight regarding the proper storage of coal ash which is generated by their power plants.
As governor, I feel that you should demand that Duke Energy clean up all the coal ash which has contaminated the water supply of the Dan River and any other tributaries which have also (been) contaminated. This should be done at no cost to the consumer. It is high time you folks started protecting the citizens of this great state and not the special interest of big business.
I also find it remarkable when your counterparts in Raleigh allow lobbyists to change the laws of North Carolina at the behest of Duke Energy and then play “dumb” as to how the new provisions were inserted in a Regulatory Reform Bill which was signed by you.
I am confident that the next governor, Gov. Cooper, will work for the people of North Carolina and not for the special interest of big business.
