The Richmond County Board of Education opted on Tuesday to spare Spring Break, make up one school day missed due to winter weather and forgive two other days.
Spring Break is scheduled for April 21 through April 25.
Feb. 12, which was originally a professional development day but converted to a makeup day that also was missed due to snow, will now be made up on March 26. March 26 also was originally scheduled a professional development day.
State law requires students to receive at least 1,025 hours of instructional time. The Richmond County Schools calendar has 1,080 hours built into it. Board members approved a recommendation by Superintendent George Norris to make up the Feb. 12 day on March 26 and eliminate the other two days.
Students missed Jan. 29 through Jan. 31 and made one up during a Saturday school session on Feb. 1. The two other days were converted into teacher work days, a move that didn’t require the students to be present.
With Feb. 12 to be made up on March 26, “we have enough of those banked hours (above the state minimum) to do away with the other two,” said board member Joe Richardson.
“Now, if we have a day that we miss because of inclement weather, we will make it up that Saturday,” Richardson said.
