ELLERBE — Anyone that lives in Ellerbe has more than likely already seen that Family Dollar is open for business.

On Saturday, employees and store manager Shelai Rush will tell everyone else during a grand opening celebration at 8 a.m. at the store, located at 2229 N. Main St.

Family Dollar has joined the small community in order to provide a wide range of discounted items, from groceries to clothes. Rush said the store had a soft opening on Feb. 20. It currently has three full-time and three part-time employees.

The location is Family Dollar’s third in Richmond County, with stores already established in Hamlet and Rockingham. In November, the Richmond County Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a conditional use permit for a fourth Family Dollar in East Rockingham.

“We’ve been really busy,” Rush said. “Our District Manager (Jim Marguita) says our numbers have been great so far. Everyone is glad we’re here.”

Rush is an Ellerbe resident and was managing the Family Dollar in Pinebluff before being asked to take over the new store. It was a chance for her to come home so she jumped on it, Rush said.

The official grand opening for the new Family Dollar will be Saturday starting with a ribbon cutting out front at 8 a.m. with the Ellerbe town council, Mayor Lee Berry and a representative from the Chamber of Commerce.

Ribbon-cutting isn’t the only thing for local residents to look forward to with the new opening, though.

Frito-Lay, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Proctor and Gamble and Pedigree dog treats have donated different items to be given away throughout the day until they run out.

“Almost all vendors have given something to be given away,” Rush said.

A drawing at 4 p.m. will award two lucky winners with a Fooseball table and a basketball goal specifically donated by Coca-Cola, Rush added.

“Items that are usually a dollar will be two for dollar on Saturday,” Rush said.

The Ellerbe Family Dollar had only nine days to get the store open as the staff endured winter storm Pax, which delayed some shipments, Rush said.

“It basically gave us six days to open, but with the help of Jim Marguita we opened on schedule,” Rush said. “I give all the credit to my team.”

Family Dollar in Ellerbe is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each Sunday.

Family Dollar has more than 8,000 locations in 46 states, according to the corporate website.
