Plight of the homeless

February 24, 2014

To the editor:

This cold long winter has brought to light again the plight of the homeless in this county. It seems some that are willing to help are prevented from doing so.

To those who believe, the Holy Bible says there will always be the poor. Also, we are to help them. For what it may be worth, I will offer a suggestion.

Like a lot of our leaders in Washington, those in our city and county have some of this priorities mixed up. It seems they can find ways to accomplish a lot of things through grants, donations, the Cole Foundation, etc., for the things that bring us pleasure. I do not begrudge anything that is for the betterment of the people.

As for a shelter for the homeless, why can’t we start a campaign and use the same method? We have a nice shelter for the animals, surely we could do the same for the homeless.

I hope this suggestion will start people to thinking. A joint effort between the people, our leaders, both city and county and trustees, could bring this about. I do not think the churches should have to shoulder it all.

I realize there are some people that are against helping the poor and some look down on the downtrodden. Well, all I can say is, they are getting their reward now.
