To the editor:
During the recent government shut-down, KIND (kids in need donations) was started in Richmond County to help those who receive support from the WIC program.
Businesses, churches and many individuals have brought donations for KIND to the DSS offices and to Bryant’s Turf. But, quite possibly, the youngest contributions are the kindergarten students at East Rockingham Elementary School.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Andrea Kinsey, who enlisted the other kindergarten teachers and students, the competency of kindergarten standard KE1: understanding basic economic concepts, the learning objective “students will understand needs/ wants and and how needs influence spending in order to survive” was studied, and these young students put the lesson into practice by giving their ice cream money for infants who needed milk.
For two weeks in October, the five kindergarten classes gave up over $64. Even more amazing is that many students have continued for two months to give up ice cream money for those in need. In these seasons of thanks and of giving, what a wonderful dedication those kindergarten children are showing to a worthy cause.
