ROCKINGHAM — Even though the calendar says November, two Rockingham youths guided their baseball team to a championship earlier this month.
Jonathan Lee and Alec Poplin were members of the Pee Dee Pirates 14U baseball team which captured the Winter World Series championship last Sunday in Rocky Mount.
The team which is based out of Cheraw, S.C., has players from Rockingham, Laurinburg, Pembroke as well as Clio, Chesterfield and McBee in South Carolina.
“They played extremely well,” Pirates head coach Robbie James said. “We went undefeated and our defense was really good, we only gave up 11 runs in the five games.”
The Pirates were also effect at the plate, scoring 47 runs to go 5-0 in the three-day event.
“They did exactly what we wanted them to do,” James said. “I’m extremely proud of their work ethic.”
Other members of the team are: Takoda Bullard, Austin Ellifrits, Clint English, Matt Hyatt, Andrew Sheppard, Bladen Strickland, Chase Wallace, Trevor Wilkerson and Brandon White.
