Newman Jernigan, 88, of Gibson, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.
Newman was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Robeson County. He was the son of the late Newman Emmit Jernigan and Caro Lockey Jernigan.
He was a husband of 62 years to the late Hazel Jacobs Jernigan. He was a proud WWII United States Army Veteran awarded two Bronze Star Medals and the Purple Heart Medal for his bravery and service. He worked as a carpenter and farmer before retiring. Newman was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans Association and a charter member of the Gibson Fire Department. He was a member of the Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church and enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, and sharing time with his family.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by sons, Robert and Cecil Jernigan; brothers, Oliver “O.J.” Jernigan and Culberth “Doc” Jernigan; sisters, Nunice Jernigan Sweatt and Clare Nitti.
Mr. Jernigan is survived by his children, two sons, Jerry Jernigan and wife Mae of Laurinburg, Richard Jernigan and wife Shirley of Rockingham; daughter, Melissa “Moose” Jernigan of Laurinburg; a sister, Lois Ellis of Plainfield, Ind.; ten grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Joel Quick and Pastor Bo Grooms officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest County.
