A little help can go a long way.
Once again the generous acts and giving of people in the community have made a huge impact in someone’s life. A barbecue and chicken fundraiser was held last weekend for Steve Snead, a heart transplant recipient, to help with medical costs that accompany such a procedure.
The fundraiser was a great success — and it began with a compromise.
Joe Wilkes, pastor at Abundant Life Church in Rockingham, said that his goal was to raise $10,000. Tony Clark, associate pastor, was looking forward to raising $5,000, so they decided to meet in the middle at $7,500. Wilkes is very proud to say that well over $9,000 was raised from the fundraiser.
The best news yet, Wilkes said, is that he had seen Snead several times this week, one month after his Sept. 1 operation, and that he seems to be improving.
“He’s got a long way to go, but with God’s help and God’s grace he is going to be okay because God still performs miracles,” said Wilkes. “I would like to thank the community for their great support for our fundraiser for Steve Snead. We want to thank everybody that came out on Saturday to support the singing for the fundraiser.”
“We delivered over 1,000 plates,” said Wilkes.
Wilkes said that it is not easy planning a fundraiser and that it takes a lot of work and dedication.
“It is hard and you have to have people who are committed and our people were committed,” he said. “Our people at Abundant Life Church went to the local businesses and some went other places and ask people to buy plates.”
“Christina and Steve were very thankful and appreciative when we gave them the money,” Wilkes said. “I am just so humble about how much was raised and how hard our people worked putting this together.”
Wilkes is very appreciative of the youth who wanted to lend a helping hand in the fundraiser by selling donuts, which allowed them to raise $500.
“We all can make a difference if we help,” said Wilkes.
