The Ride for PAWS motorcycle fundraiser on Oct. 28 in Richmond County was deemed a success by event coordinators, who said they were pleased with the turnout.

“The weather was surprisingly nice in spite of Hurricane Sandy,” said coordinator Laura Dick of Sport Cycles. “We had 50 motorcycles with 61 riders to participate. Our ride was led by Joel Covington and Lisa Ledford who were riding a motorcycle owned by the late Ricky and Leslie Fetner. Both the Fetners were strong supporters of the Humane Society and we were honored to have the motorcycle in the lead for our ride.”

According to Dick, the ride raised more than $1,000, which will be used to help get the Humane Society of Richmond County back on its feet.

“We rode to the boat landing at Morrow Mountain and then to the Lions’s club in Ellerbe,” Dick said. “The fall leaves were beautiful as well as the cotton fields that we passed along the way.”

She added that she was thankful for K2/K9 Solutions out of Derby, who gave a demonstration at the Lions Club after the ride.

“The team showed us how the well-trained dogs could retrieve, sniff out bombs and work hand in hand with law enforcement by subduing suspects,” Dick said. “Thanks to all the riders and the wonderful people who worked so hard to make this ride a success. Special thanks to our sponsors and those people who could not make the ride, but donated anyway.”
