ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior wrestling team went 4-1 to finish second in the Southeastern Conference tournament Saturday at Raider Gymnasium.
Six members of the squad were selected to the all-conference team: Trinity Hunt (106), Randy Altman (120), Sean Thompson (138), Devontae Watkins (145), Jacob Staub (182) and David Watkins III (285).
Hunt went undefeated in the tournament, registering two pinfall victories, two wins by decision and a forfeit. Altman, Thompson, Devontae Watkins, Staub and David Watkins were all 4-1.
In the tournament, Richmond defeated Lumberton (48-27), Purnell Swett (54-23), Scotland (38-32) and Hoke County (48-31). Its only loss came to regular season and tournament champion Pinecrest, 48-27.
Scotland’s Nick Kee was named as the SEC’s wrestler of the year and Pinecrest’s Travis Flinchum was honored as the conference’s coach of the year.
The Raiders, which finished third in the league standings in the regular season, hoped to receive a wild-card bid for the dual team playoffs. However, when the brackets were revealed Ardrey Kell, Panther Creek, Porter Ridge and Wake Forest-Rolesville grabbed the four wild-card bids in the state 4A playoffs.
Pinecrest (21-5) will face New Bern (25-7) 6 p.m. today at Jordan High School, while Scotland (26-9) will travel to Knightdale High to face Sanderson (15-2) also at 6 p.m.
