Police investigators say a 27-year-old Rockingham man was shot to death as he tried to run away from three men who kidnapped him at a Fayetteville gas station over the weekend.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, two of the kidnappers got into Errol Williams’ car at the gas station around 4:45 a.m. Sunday and forced him to drive a short distance to the area of Shaw Road and Holland Street, while the third man followed in a different vehicle.

Authorities said Williams tried to run away at some point and was shot and killed.

WNCT reported that the surveillance photos released earlier by police showed one of the alleged kidnappers at the cash register and the late model, silver or gray Kia Sportage involved in the crime.

Police said the men returned to the gas station Sunday afternoon, shortly after 3 p.m., robbed two customers inside the store and stole surveillance equipment at gunpoint. But by that time investigators had already released footage of the men to the media. Investigators are trying to identify the trio.

Police said they do not know the motive for the kidnapping and murder.
